The national administrator, Down Syndrome Foundation Nigeria, Nike Denis, has said sports have significant positive effects on the mental well-being of children with Down Syndrome.

Speaking during the foundation’s inter-house sport in celebration of 2024 World Down Syndrome Day, titled, ‘End the stereotypes,’ said the sense of accomplishment they derived from mastering new skills, participating in sports competitions, or achieving personal fitness goals builds self-esteem and confidence in children with Down Syndrome.

“Sports activities provide a platform for social interaction and teamwork. Through collaborative efforts in the field, participants build relationships and develop essential interpersonal skills. This, in turn, translates to improved social integration as individuals with Down Syndrome become active contributors to a more inclusive society,” she said.

Speaking on the foundation programmes, she said, “Our vocational programs are designed to create opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome to showcase their talents and contribute to society. Whether through educational programs, skill-building workshops, or community events, we aim to create inclusive spaces where individuals with different abilities can thrive.”

One of the students with Down Syndrome, Moyosore Ijaye, who identified himself as the ambassador of the foundation, said he was happy to be part of the foundation as he has been able to study and learn skills.

He said, “I am happy to be a part of the Down Syndrome Foundation, I can interact with people, I can read and write, I love sports activities and my favorite color is blue”

A guest at the event,  Dehinde Odunayo, “Today’s sporting activity is part of the push for including them into the society. Helping them to believe that there is an ability in every disability.”

“Like you saw just a while back, we are showing them that with proper practice and preparation, they can compete in the larger scale of sports. This helps their beliefs that they can be whatever they choose to become and live the life they want to live. It is all about inclusive and giving hope to those who feel they cannot achieve a certain goal.”
